Welcome to ZahniserInstitute.org, the online home of the Zahniser Institute. Through education, engagement, and research, we promote ways of being, knowing, and acting that honor and lead to health and well-being for all of creation. The Zahniser Institute is named after Howard Zahniser, the champion and writer of the Wilderness Act of 1964, which created the National Wilderness Preservation System.
The Zahniser Institute provides opportunities for students, faculty, staff and community members to learn about and actively care for all of creation.
The Zahniser Institute educates people in sustainable thought and practice, empowers people to make the changes they wish to see in the world, and provides civic engagement opportunities in the areas of sustainability and wilderness to all community members.
Using such approaches as ecological education, critical pedagogy, transformative learning, and community-based learning, ZIES facilitates educational experiences that are just, inclusive, participative, and transformative.
- To honor and appreciate the intrinsic value of creation.
- To value ways of being, knowing, and acting that focus on creating instead of destroying.
- To value and promote health and well-being for all life.
